Our horizons.

Creations inspired by the Ligurian universe

Name's origins

Ligyes has ancient origins and an eclectic and adventurous style. It is a meeting between opposites that only a proud and introverted land like Liguria, inlaid by the meticulous chisel of winds and unexpected sea storms, has been able to gradually reconcile. It owes its name to the ancient tribes from which the illustrious lineage of explorers, poets and merchants who became famous throughout the world derives. It inherits their history and aspirations.

The founders

Ligyes is the story of a bond with the land of origin which, despite time and distance, always recalls the same port.

Doctor Paolo Montanaro

A veterinary doctor, he has traveled the world with Liguria in his heart and the dream of designing a map of the most representative perfumes of places and cultures historically linked to it. He moved first to England then to the United States and has often observed his land from far away. Ligyes is a project that he has been cultivating for a lifetime. The Ponente, for him, is Santa Maria del Bosco where his grandparents cultivated terraces. It is the fragrance of woods and gardens, of basil, fig, violets and citrus fruits. And, above all, the olive groves and family crops that date back to 1300, which he devotes himself to with true passion. Perfumery has become a constant in-depth study starting from the courses attended at the Grasse Institute of Perfumery and at Mouillette & Co in Parma. Now it is the soul of the existing project; a journey without boundaries, like the horizons that unfold in front of the coasts of his Liguria.

Doctor Giovannella Bonioli

A graduate in Philosophy with a thesis on the Religions of primitive peoples, she was born in Genoa and lived, as a child, in Corso Italia with a view of the sea. The window wide open onto the horizon with the wind bringing in the fragrances of the mediterranean scrub was her first, unforgettable olfactory experience and the beginning of an interest that would accompany her over time. Passionate about perfumery since she collected the first miniatures, after having attended introductory and in-depth courses, she joined the Grasse Institute of Perfumery and Mouillettes & Co in Parma with the intent of completing her studies. She arrived in Ligyes in a boiling hot july, speaking with Paolo about memories and nature. The perfumes of pithospheres mixed with hints of salt; the Bonassola lavender that her grandfather, who she spent her summers with, grew in his garden; tobacco from the family’s lands grown next to the venetian farmhouse, with its primordial smell. Perfumery has become the object of study and constant in-depth analysis starting from the courses attended. Now it is the soul of the existing project; a journey without boundaries, like the horizons that unfold in front of the coasts of her Liguria.

The Godmother

MARIA BRIGNOLE SALE, duchess of Galliera

Maria Brignole Sale, Duchess of Galliera, was an extraordinary benefactor of the city of Genova, who lived in the Nineteenth Century. Belonging to one of the most prestigious families of the Genoa aristocracy and culture, known mainly for her charity works, she is also remembered for her patronage activity and for her important artistic and cultural legacies. Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Bianco, the Galliera Hospital, the San Raffaele in Coronata Hospital and the San Filippo children’s Hospital are due to her.

An admirable figure, philanthropist and benefactor, the Duchess of Galliera represents, for Ligyes, she was an exemplary godmother. The founders, inspired by her, decided to allocate part of the proceeds to charity and cultural initiatives.
